I'm alive

Sorry, y'all. I've been a little MIA lately but I have a really good excuse. I've been spending the last month or so setting up a proper blog for my photography and actually having a few portrait shoots to actually post on said blog. But that's no excuse, I haven't given you an update on anything lately, and for that I'm truly sorry. Other than setting up the blog, we have been attempting to prepare for the Christmas craziness this year. We don't have any house lights, no Christmas tree, no decorations inside the house. It's kind of sad, but the reality is that we 1) Cannot get to all the decorations as they are still packed in boxes in the garage, which I meant to clean out this weekend but it will be a project for next weekend instead, and 2) we are not at this house much during the Christmas holiday. It didn't make sense to decorate and then leave (all the while upping our PG&E bill with Christmas lights) for 2 weeks, regardless of Christmas cheer. I'm hoping in the next few years we'll get the chance to decorate and celebrate here in our home that we have created together, but this year will be spent with family, 4 Christmas obligations on Christmas Day alone, which is quite a lot. We want to see everyone and celebrate with all of our family, but the Christmas marathon is a dream for the young, not the 20-somethings that are desperate for a few days of peace and quiet.

But I digress.

I did have a few updates for y'all though. I'd like to give them to you now:

1. The possibility of snow. This a recent thing that has happened, but can you see the forecast for tomorrow? SNOW?! In STOCKTON?! Uhhhhh. Last time I checked, I lived in the Central Valley. Yikes! I'm totally bringing my camera to work tomorrow and you bet your butt I'll be jumping outside every 20 seconds to see if it's snowing yet. If it does snow, I promise to take pictures and post them.

2. My blog: www.ondeckphotography.net. Visit it. Comment on it. Be kind to the look and feel right now, it's pretty set to go, but I'm still working on how I'd like the photos to actually appear on the blog, so that look will change a bit in the next few days. But please visit and let me know what you think. I plan to keep up both blogs, but the other one will feature more of my photography as well as some of my personal anectdotes. This blog will serve more as a random update site, though I promise to spend more time on it in the upcoming months.

3. The water heater in our house has been leaking. Not a lot, and it only happens after using up all the hot water by doing dishes. But still, they're not supposed to leak and with our home warranty, the repair or replacement of the whole unit is free with the $55 service charge. The plumber finally came by the house today and said it's definitely ready to be replaced, he'll call later with a time of when he can come to do it, but I'm so excited that it's covered by the warranty and we won't be out $800 right before the holidays. So if you're buying a home, BUY THE WARRANTY. Our sellers paid for the first year but we have a few other appliances that qualify if they break, so we will definitely extend it for another year, probably until the AC dies. So I'm very happy about all this :-)

4. I'm almost done with Christmas shopping. Almost. There are a few other items left that I will get online or as I have time, thankfully the bulk of the shopping is done. All without me having to go to the mall which is basically my version of Heaven.

I think that's about it for me! How are you doing? :-)

Too much?

So I have this friend...

She taught me a really evil way to make me gain 1,000 pounds. This is the product of an hour, two bags of milk chocolate chocolate chips, and two pounds of pretzels. Double boil the chocolate chips and dunk away! I prefer the sprinkles.

But here's the thing.

Did you see the stats above? 2 pounds of pretzels?!

Oh my. The sprinkles. Oh how I love sprinkles.

5 batches. Do you think I went overboard??

Plant a tree

I'm alive...

Hi all,

It has been a long time since my last post, and for that I apologize. I've attempted to stay in touch by updating on Twitter (it loads on the right hand side of my blog), but it really isn't enough. Between me getting sick twice, my grandmother passing away, and now my mom's surgery I've just been too stressed to put everything into written word. But I'm back (sort of) and trying to make up for it.

I am booking some portrait sessions and some more are on their way, which truly excites me. I want to be taking more pictures and people are so interesting to photograph. Everyone is different, so every session is different and I'm new enough to this type of photography that the unknown is super scary, but I absolutely love it. It's a good kind of nervous, I like that photography keeps me on my toes.

In more personal news, my grandmother's passing was very sudden and we're still dealing with it. Slowly, each day, we become more used to the idea of her not being around and although I didn't see her more than a few times a year, we will all certainly realize she's gone when Christmas comes around this year. My grandpa is doing better, this is a lot of stress for him to take on at the age of 90-something. It's definitely an adjustment. I only have one biological grandparent left - my mom's mom. Which reminds me, I need to write her a letter. Anyway, I'm starting to worry that my children won't be able to meet or even take pictures with any of their great-grandparents. I have a few pictures with mine, and although I didn't know them, I at least had some pictures with them. My children might not have that with any great grandparents.

My mother's surgery went really well. She's been up and moving without much of a problem at all! I helped her get home on Friday and I'll be here until tomorrow evening. She doesn't need much help but we've gotten some things in place for her so she can go longer stretches of time without people helping her do things - like picking up things from the floor! I love playing nurse, so it's been kind of fun. Though I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty tired. But she's my mom! I'm happy to help.

My last bit of news is about my dizziness problem. The doctor believes it's just an electrolyte imbalance. That makes sense, I've had a lot of stressors in my life lately including illness which can shock your system and throw things out of balance. Some gatorade and I should be as good as new. I already feel better two days later so I think that's all it was. Thank goodness!

No pictures to show on this one, sorry about that! I really hate posting without pictures, but I will get better I promise. A big thank you to my few loyal readers (Jessica, I saw you posted a few comments to!! Thank you hun!). I hope to get out of my blogging slump soon!

Friday Five...

courtesy of of Miz Booshay

1. How often do you get sick with a cold? The flu?
I used to get a cold every summer, especially when I was a lifeguard or babysitting. Now it seems I get sick every Fall. Darn college students. I've probably only had the flu a handful of times in my 24+ years of existance.

2. Are you the sort of person who goes to work or school no matter how sick you are or are you willing to stay at home when it gets bad?
Depends. If I'm contagious then I definitely stay home. If not, it depends on my energy level. Most of the time I head to work but if it's a slow day and I feel like crap, then it's back to bed for me!

3. Will you get a flu shot?
Got it already. They had a free clinic through our Pharmacy School so I signed up. First one in my whole life, and I felt horrible for a few days afterwards (like I got the flu). Debating about getting the swine flu shot... **ahem** I mean H1N1. whatever....

4. What do you do to keep from getting sick in the winter?
Nothing. I have been better about drinking water and washing my hands/using Purell at work. That seems to be helping quite a bit. Just used Lysol all over my desk this morning.

5. What is your favorite thing to do when you stay home from work or school?
I would love to say "sleeping" or "watching movies". I do watch movies and sleep but I usually end up doing something I don't normally have time to do. Like write letters or finally email people back. With a movie playing in the background :-)

I love the Friday 5! Happy Friday everyone!

McPhee Sale

There's not much to say about this event but it's become a true tradition that I love to be a part of. The McPhees have a large red angus cattle ranch and once a year they have an auction to sell off part of their stock and this is when my in-laws bulk theirs up! I finally took my camera to get a few shots and I think I got some good ones. Check it out!

I think he likes me

This is Matt. He has some fancy title but he's been the spotter for our side of the ring since way before I started going to this thing

The heifers went in the morning, then we had lunch, then off to the bull sale. I wasn't feeling well so we left right after lunch so this was one of the last pictures I got. More next time I hope!

Life on the Ranch

Ok before you yell at me, let me warn you. This post is LONG with probably more pictures than I've ever posted in a single blog entry.

You've been warned.

Let's begin.

For Labor Day weekend Matt and I decided to take advantage of the three-day weekend. Saturday we would head to his parent's house on the ranch. Sunday we would go to my parent's house for their famous Labor Day BBQ. Monday we would... be lazy. Bums. Completely useless. It was going to be great.

This blog post is about going to the ranch. I always make sure to bring my camera as I never know what will happen, but this weekend I went with the intention to document the ranch. I have to say, I didn't do the ranch justice. My brother-in-law and his boys stopped by for a visit as well so I took to taking pictures of them instead.

Sorry about that.

Anyway, here is my take on the ranch. Here is my little male model nephew, Hayden. When he runs, he stares at my camera. It makes for some pretty hilarious photographs. Not to mention he's adorable. Run Hayden, run!

Ah... boys. That's Robert, my brother-in-law (Matt's step-bro) and his two sons. Hayden is on his back, he turns 3 in November. The big smiler is his older brother Payton, who is 4. They're starting to play soccer but the game quickly turned into a wrestling match.
This is my mother-in-law, Lisa and her oldest grandson, Payton. He was a little warm and she took to sprinkling cold water on his face. Being a big fan of Spiderman, he has taken to climbing everything in sight, including the porch railing!
Awww, if I tell Hayden to look at me, this is the shy smile I always get. ADORABLE! Makes my uterus skip a beat.

"I think my uterus just skipped a beat"

Ok here's where it gets complicated. The older man on the right hand side of the photo? That is my father-in-law's (Matt's step dad) father. So he's my step-grandfather-in-law. Whew! He loves all the kids running around him and always has that sweet smile on his face.
Ah, my little model. His face is a little blown out from the light, forgive me for not editing the photo before posting them here. However, does this really look like a 2 year old?? I think this is a photo where we can see what he will look like when he's older. See that mole on his chin too? *swoon*
Ok, I switched to the pups. This is the largest of the three male labs they have here on the ranch, Gus. He's got BEAUTIFUL golden eyes, and if I properly exposed this picture you'd be able to see them better. I'll do better next time, I promise.
Awwww Coop. His name is Cooper but I always call him Coop (I wonder if it bothers my MIL?). He was dead asleep with his head up against the house, but if you watched him his head would slowly creep down the wall into the pillow beneath him. Out of the three dogs, Coop reminds me the most of our boy Charlie. The shape of his face, the way he leeeaaaaans on you when he wants to be petted, and his jumpy little walk when he gets excited. They're practically twins!
And this is why I love my 24mm. The boys wouldn't stay still for a photo so I stood back and got most of the tree, and the sun flare. Ahhh the sun flare goodness.
I love this porch. I met Matt before they painted the house and remodelled inside and it was wonderful then, but when they repainted the porch everything was a vibrant red and white. Here's my hubby talking to his grandparents while the boys play out on the grass.

My in-laws own 15 acres of land in which they keep their cows. When the seasons change they may have to put the cows up in the hills while the grass here grows back in, but this time of year they're on their own property. They are strictly a Red Angus Cattle Ranch, but the grandparents have black angus. The last of their herd (5 mamas and 5 calves) has joined the pack until black angus is completely off their property (and my MIL can breathe again).
I have learned a lot about the cattle industry, but I still have a lot to learn. I can at least hold an intelligent conversation with the in-laws though, that is essential! Here is a view of their property from the end of their driveway.

You heard me. It's a long driveway. They don't own the trees that are in that pile though.
My MIL can't leave animals alone, one of the many things we have in common. About a month or two ago she found these two stray puppies at the end of her driveway and couldn't bare to let them go without food. So a few times a day she goes down there and throws dog biscuits at them. Here's the male out to check us out.
The gorgeous remodelled front of their home.
The view from their front porch. A cow and a bull were in the front pen. Their two horses, Cash and Paco, are in the pens furthest from this view.
Ahhh, #45. This is one of two bulls on the ranch (the one in the previous picture is to be sold soon). We don't deal with names anymore, MIL gets attached and then can't sell them. This cattle operation isn't commercial, many of them get sold for breeding rather than meat. This boy will make some very pretty babies in the years to come.
Ok this one is just because I think he's pretty. Look at those ears!! And those signature wrinkles above his eyes. This boy is so new he doesn't even have an ear tag yet. Based on his size he's probably only a few weeks old. He was curious though, and so was I. I've bottle fed calves before so they don't really scare me, but those calves can do some damage if they wanted to.
The other bull, numero 78. Also a pretty boy. He likes to act all tough and give me the "evil eye" but he sat there licking one of his girls faces in between posing for a picture. My in-laws don't just raise cattle, they raise gentlemen!

So that's it! I have a ton of pictures (400 to be almost exact) from that one day, but I had to pair it down to my favorites. Now I'm off to get prints of everything because I'm the only one in the family who takes pictures... and they all beg me to make prints and send them off. It's quite the job, but I like having a niche in this family :-) Until next time, y'all!

Charlie turns 3!!!

I can't believe it, my very first dog of my own has already turned 3 years old. The picture below was taken just a few minutes ago while he enjoyed his birthday treat, a delicious (relative term, I suppose) bully stick. He just loves these darn things, and although they smell a bit they last him at least 10 minutes, they help clean his teeth and they're easy to digest, what more could I want from a dog treat?

And really, what more could I want from a dog?? He's very healthy, very loveable, he loves to follow me around the house and will sit outside the door (any door, the bathroom, the bedroom, the shower) and wait to make sure I'm doing alright. He is very protective and makes sure to let us know when people are outside our house. But you could seriously stick your fingers in his mouth and he won't even think about biting down. He's as sweet as can be and although he has his puppy moments, he's our boy for now and for always.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. Happy 3rd birthday, Charlie!!

Charlie

Random piece of knowledge, did you know Charlie turns 3 years old next Saturday? 3 years old?!?! Isn't this the face of a mature dog and not a wild puppy?

Heaven

I have been wanting to go to the K-9 competition for probably three years now, but somehow I've always been too busy to make it. This year I was able to go and I think I got some great shots. I love German Shepherds, they're probably my favorite breed ever, and I was surrounded by them for 6 hours yesterday. They had three phases, the search phase, the obedience and agility phase, and the protection phase. I'll explain as I go along so enjoy!

Here is one of the dogs during the search phase. There were three cars parked on the field as well as two boxes like the one below. The goal was to find the person who was hiding in one of the items. Turns out the person was hiding in this box (and only 9 dogs found them, probably out of 25 or 30).

I was loving the different ways the dogs wore their badges. Yup, they get badges. Usually it was on their collar but this one was the most obvious.
This next dog and handler were the only ones out of Madera. She was also the only female handler out there. She was AMAZING. Her dog, I think she called him Axel, was extremely calm and his movements very calculated. They completely dominated the competition, if they didn't win overall I'd be very surprised.
This was during the obedience/agility phase. It was a regular obstacle course that you see in a lot of obedience competitions, but the handlers had to bark at them in German to get them to sit, stay, control their speed, and get through each part of the course. I stood by the little window because I knew I'd get some great shots of the dogs hopping through. I know my old German Shepherd/Black Lab mix Dune could easily clear a 6 foot fence at my parent's old house, so these little jumps were nothing to these dogs.

This dog and handler were awesome. They are from Chico and the dog's name is Vegas, how awesome is that? Vegas was a stereotypical German Shepherd in that he was HUGE and fluffy. How these dogs could fit into this little tunnel was beyond me, but Vegas sure proves that it was tough in this picture.
This is one of my favorites. Recently (July 23rd I believe), a K-9 officer was shot and killed in Lathrop. The dog's name was Niko and this was his car. His handler, whose leg you can see sticking out of the car right here, has a huge Niko tattoo on his right calf to honor his fallen partner. The entire competition was dedicated to him and Niko and all the proceeds from the concessions and services at this competition are going towards Niko's successor.
This was the favorite phase. It's technically called "Protection" and not attack, but there was a lot of attacking going on. The poor guys in these suits, it had to be close to 100 out there and they were out there for a good hour in them. Yikes! So there were three scenarios to this phase.

1. There is a domestic dispute and the officer has to send the dog past the victim and take down the attacker. He also has to release when told. Some dogs did really well but most of them had trouble letting go!
2. The second phase is a criminal refuses to turn around and show the officer his hands, so he sends the dog. The criminal, however, has a gun and when he turns around he sprays the dog with a hose. The dog has to avoid the hose while still going forward to attack the man. The funny thing is, the officer in this next shot is from the San Joaquin County Sherrif's office. After the dog successfully attacked the criminal and released, the criminal then sprayed the officer and the dog attacked him again. This went on a few times until the dog bit the guy in the butt, pretty dang hilarious. The dog had already attacked the victim in the first phase so he knew he wasn't going to win, so they gave us all a little show.
3. The last phase really threw off a lot of the dogs. Two guys are supposed to be fighting out in the distance. The officer was supposed to tell them to knock it off and then they pull a gun on the officer. At that point the officer then hits the floor and sends the dog instead. About halfway to the guys fighting, they give up and the dog is supposed to be called off and return to the handler. It was a long distance so some of the dogs couldn't hear but maybe 2 or 3 (including the woman handler from Madera) were able to do it and it completely blew my mind. I love what these dogs can do.
So that was my Saturday, how was yours?
